Over 500 tiny lives have just been saved — thanks to kind undercover rescuers who just raided a market in Asia that often sells live animals as pets.

On Sunday, wildlife authorities in West Bengal rescued around 550 protected Indian birds who were found locked inside tiny metal cages.

Species such as parakeet, Asian koel and hill myna were just some of the birds who were forced to live inside such cramped conditions. While these species can survive in captivity, they thrive in the wild — where traffickers are targeting them left and right to capture and sell as pets.

Thanks to the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau, nearly all of the birds involved in this case have been turned over to trained veterinarians who will be able to nurse them back to health. Sadly, some newly hatched chicks were also found in the cages and they did not survive the conditions.

Recently, West Bengal has emerged as a major hub for wildlife smugglers to catch and sell live animals. But luckily, authorities have already arrested nine different people in connection to this case and they will appear in court shortly.

And after everything they’ve been through, these once caged birds will keep their freedom.
