Cod, the fish that built Newfoundland and sustained the province for centuries, is now scarcely seen, and is at risk of becoming the stuff of myth and legend to generations who never knew its power and stature.

Twenty years after the federal government ordered a moratorium on the largest cod harvest in Newfoundland and Labrador — subsequent closures came in the years following that dramatic 1992 decision — cod is far from a driving force in the economy.
Instead, as the CBC's Azzo Rezori tells us in a feature report, what we used to know as King Cod is no longer a living presence, particularly to the young.

"He's still a living memory, but that too will change, and he will slip further and further into the myth that's already been created for him in his retirement home," Rezori says.
